This time of year, everyone’s talking about Santa’s Naughty or Nice list. We thought we’d share our own version — the Naughty and Nice list of financial planning.
On the Naughty List:
- Waiting until the last minute to plan your business exit. We see this all the time — an owner is ready to step away, but the business isn’t. That usually means leaving money on the table, or even worse, not being able to sell at all.
- Ignoring tax strategies. Taxes are usually the biggest silent partner in your business and your retirement. If you don’t plan for them, you’ll end up giving more away than you need to.
- Avoiding financial conversations with your family. We get it — money conversations can feel awkward. But leaving them unsaid often causes confusion, stress, or conflict when the time comes to make decisions.
Now, let’s look at the Nice List:
- Building an intentional exit strategy early. When we work with business owners, we help them prepare years ahead of time. That way, when they’re ready, the business is ready — and they walk away with the value they deserve.
- Structuring wealth with tax efficiency in mind. The right planning strategies can reduce taxes today, in retirement, and even when passing wealth to the next generation. That means more of your hard work stays with your family.
- Having open financial conversations with your family. With the right guidance, these don’t have to be stressful talks. They can be empowering, bringing everyone clarity and peace of mind.
At Aristata, our role is helping you move from the Naughty list to the Nice list. And that looks different for everyone.
For some, it means putting the first steps of an exit plan in place, even if retirement feels far away. For others, it means weaving tax strategies into both business and personal finances so they work together for your benefit. And for many families, it means sitting down and making sure the people you love understand your plan, your wishes, and your vision for the future.
Because being on the Nice List isn’t about being perfect — it’s about being prepared. And the best gift you can give your family and your future this Christmas is confidence and clarity.
From all of us here at Aristata, Merry Christmas and Happy New Year!
